For this month, the Squamish Environmental Society will meet on Sunday (March 10) at 8 a.m. (PDT) at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub for the bird count. The group will be looking for signs of spring robins, evening grosbeak and other species. For more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is holding a family breakfast on Sunday (March 10) from 8 to 11 a.m. The price is right as for $5 you get pancakes, eggs, ham, sausages and coffee, or $7 for the hungry man special.

Children ages 11 to 15 years are invited to the Squamish Public Library tonight (Thursday, March 7) at 7 p.m. to know about a program that empowers them to engage in acts of service in our community.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination as designated by the United Nations (UN) is Thursday, March 21. If you know someone that you believe has contributed to overcoming racism in our community you are invited to nominate that person or organization. The Squamish Multi-faith Association is requesting nominations and forms are available at The Chief, The Howe Sound Women's Centre and the Squamish Public Library and the deadline is Tuesday (March 12). A cordial invitation is extended to everyone to attend the celebration at the library on March 21 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

An Evening of Space Exploration is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 when retired NASA engineer Jim Meyer will be at the Legion on Monday (March 11) at 7 p.m. Jim will show a short video and talk about some of the highlights of his space experiences (162 missions) from the Apollo missions to lunar modules, Voyager, Mariner, Viking and ending with the Mars Rover Spirit. After the presentation, an informal question and answer session will be held.

Interested community residents are invited to attend the next meeting of the Hilltop House Support Society meeting on Thursday (March 14) at 9:30 a.m.

The Canada Lecture series sponsored by the Squamish Public Library and Quest University will be held at the library on Thursday (March 14) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Erin Wells Bonning and the subject will be "Black Holes: Signals from the Vast Deep."

Plan to attend the St. Patrick's Day luncheon at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Sunday (March 17) at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $8 each and to attend, please call Ray at (604) 848-2000 ext. 5004 by Sunday (March 10).

The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital have purchased new items for the gift shop at the hospital ad include spring scarves, jewelry, fluffy stuffed toys along with toys for toddlers. Your patronage is appreciated.

A special happy 80th birthday to Thor Froslev and his celebration takes place at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (March 9).

Another event taking place at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is the St. Patty's Dinner and Karaoke night on Saturday, March 16, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. On the menu is Irish stew, bread and dessert for $7. The new karaoke machine has 200 new songs so it should be a fun evening.

A Senior Cyber Safety workshop sponsored by the Hotspot will take place on Friday (March 22) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Seniors Centre. Get informed of the challenges and safety risks of the digital world at this free workshop. Also, the Hotspot is providing free one-on-one computer tutoring for seniors on Wednesdays in March from 1 to 3 p.m. You can sign up for both programs at the front desk at the Centre.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the end of Tantalus Road at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (March 12) for a Crouching Squirrel hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
