Springtime events abound in Squamish

Citizen Scientist Alert! It happens this Saturday (May 10) at 9 a.m. when the Squamish Environment Society hosts the first Citizen Scientist Meet-Up at the Squamish Startup facility on Cleveland Avenue next to the Mountain Burger Café. A number of guest presenters will outline some great environmental projects. This is open to the public interested in the local environment at a donation of $5. The Squamish Public Library and Quest University Canada lecture series continues tonight (Thursday, May 8) at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Melanie Hoffman and her subject will be: “The Fascination of the Really Small: Size Matters at the Nanoscale.”

The Re-Use-It Fair is always a popular event and it takes place on Saturday (May 10) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. You are requested to take items that are in good shape that someone else could use to the event before Saturday at 1 p.m. If you can spare a couple hours to volunteer for this event, please email [email protected].

This evening (Thursday, May 8) at 7 p.m. the Squamish Historical Society has its annual general meeting in the Lions dining car at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Also on Saturday (May 10) at 2 p.m. the grand opening of the Squamish Historical Society Museum in the Wilkie Building takes place at the Heritage Park.

The Britannia Mine Museum has a Family Fun Day on Saturday (May 10) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it also kicks off B.C. Mining Week. The day includes cookie mining, blacksmith demonstrations, a costume photo booth, scavenger hunt, gold panning races and more. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Japanese Taiko Sansho Daiko drummers will perform. An advertisement in The Chief offers $5 admission for one person on May 10.

If you are in the mood for gardening, plan to attend St. John’s Anglican Church’s annual Spring Fling on Saturday (May 10) from 9 a.m. to noon. Check out the local plants, cuttings, bulbs, recycled garden equipment, used books and ideas for Mother’s Day.

The Squamish Environment Society has its monthly bird count on Sunday (May 11) with members meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 7 a.m. This month the birders will be looking for signs of nesting from robins and warblers, and possibly 10 other species. For info call (604) 892-3340.

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre (HSWC) is celebrating Mother’s Day with a fundraiser benefiting the centre tomorrow night (Friday, May 9) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Chances Casino’s Match Eatery and Public House. The $10 burger and beer (or wine) also includes a silent auction, 50/50 draw and music. Tickets are available at HSWC, Pearl’s Value and Vintage, online at www.hswc.ca and at the door.

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre, the Sea to Sky Women’s Health Network and the Squamish Public Library are presenting a free workshop on Thursday (May 15) from 6 to 8 p.m. in the library. The organizers of a fundraiser to benefit the Nurses Education Fund are looking for gently used household items, sports equipment, plants or books for a garage sale this weekend. No clothes, shoes or junk, please. The event, which marks National Nurses’ Week, is planned this Saturday (May 10) from 9 to 11 a.m. at the lower parking lot at Squamish General Hospital. Items can be dropped off with either Nancy Haffey or Veronica Fincham.

The Building Futures Golf Fundraiser to benefit Squamish Montessori School is planned on May 30 at noon at Squamish Valley Golf Club. The $125 entry fee includes a round of golf, complimentary range balls, dinner, a tee gift and more. Proceeds will go toward a new school. Tax receipts are available.
