It's great news to know that during this winter, the Squamish Farmers' Market is going to be open once a month until its official summer opening in May. The location is the West Coast Railway Heritage Park and the market will be held Saturday (Jan. 15) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre. St. John's Anglican Church is putting on a Leonard Cohen evening on Saturday, Feb. 12. They've got several talented local singers lined up, but can always use a few more. Auditions are required. The Squamish Gardeners will meet at the Squamish Public Library at 6:45 p.m. on Monday (Jan. 17). Jim Mertel and Mark Armstrong will present a slideshow on the 2010 North Shore Art and Music in the Garden Tour. Non-members are welcome for a $5 drop-in fee.

On Wednesday (Jan. 19), the Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Healthy Brain Group is for those diagnosed with cognitive impairment (memory loss) due to a disease. The group meets twice a month and it is informal and supportive, providing education strategies and tips to improve brain health. The eighth annual Scrabble Tournament as part of the annual celebration of Family Literacy Week will be held at the Squamish Public Library on Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 6:45 to 8 p.m. The entry fee is $5 for individuals and $10 for teams and the money pledged goes toward literacy programs at the library and at Capilano University.

Get a team together (four to eight) and plan to participate in the Rotary Pub Trivia Night at the Royal Canadian legion Branch 277 on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 each and include an old-fashioned fish-and-chips dinner from Wigan Pier. There are categories for all ages and there are some neat prizes to be won. The Safe Ride Home program will also be available. Information pertaining to frauds and scams will be presented at the Squamish Seniors Centre on Wednesday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m. A Travel Club presentation takes place on Thursday (Jan. 20) at 1 p.m. Other programs to interest seniors include genealogy, quilting, exercise programs, yoga, knitting, paint and sketch, line dancing and more.
