Squamish teens attend national event

The Ignite and Unite Youth Centres of Canada Conference is being held in Ottawa today through Saturday (March 27 to 29) and 10 young people age 14 to 17 are attending from Squamish.

The Ignite and Unite Youth Centres of Canada Conference is being held in Ottawa today through Saturday (March 27 to 29) and 10 young people age 14 to 17 are attending from Squamish. It is interesting to know that in 2010, the Squamish Youth Centre (SYC) was ranked as one of the best in Canada with regards to best practices. Thirty seats were allotted to B.C. this year and 10 of those seats went to Squamish. The young people in the past few months have raised funds at the Farmers’ Market selling homemade crafts, cards, post cards, calendars, cookies and dog biscuits.

At the Rotary Club luncheon on March 6, a cheque for $1,100 was presented to Kathy Daniels on behalf of the Sea to Sky Community Services and that amount pays for two youth to attend. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 also gave a cheque for $550 for a youth to attend the conference. Kathy is also the manager of the SYC and she said program coordinator Renee Theoret was accompanying the young people to Ottawa.
