Editor,

The Strengthening Families program for parents and youth 10 to 14 is a parent, youth, and family skills-building program that has been designed to prevent teen substance abuse and other behaviour problems, strengthen parenting skills, improve family communication, school performance, parent-child attachment, and build family strengths.

The program is delivered with seven sessions for parents, youth, and families using realistic videos, role-playing, discussions, learning games, and family projects.

At each session we offer a meal, daycare for younger siblings and transportation for those requiring it.

The program has been proven effective in delaying the onset of adolescent substance use, lowering levels of aggression increasing the resistance to peer pressure in youth increasing the ability of parents/caregivers to set appropriate limits and show affection to and support of their children.

The program starts on Wednesday Oct. 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Squamish Elementary School

To register for this program please contact Dennis Smith at the Sea to Sky Community Services Society at 604-892-5796 Ext 284.
