Summer Reading Club registration kicks off

Celebrations will be held across the country on Monday (July 1) to celebrate Canada's 146th birthday. Our Canada Day festivities start at 10:45 a.m.

Our Canada Day festivities start at 10:45 a.m. with a parade down Cleveland Avenue from the Rotary Clock to the Cenotaph when the flag raising ceremony will include the singing of O Canada and speeches. There is entertainment planned for all ages, food concessions, Canada Day market, games, face painting and much more. The Grand Finale includes fire spinning at 9:45 p.m. followed by the popular fireworks display.

Plan to attend the annual Strawberry Social at Hilltop House on Saturday (June 29) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Donations of baked goods for the bake table is always much appreciated. The delicious strawberry shortcake and tea/coffee is just $4. Take part in the in-house raffle and the 50/50 draw. The dedicated Hilltop House Support Society volunteers sponsor this event and proceeds go towards programs and supplies to enrich the lives of residents.

This year the Summer Reading Club theme at the Squamish Public Library is Up, Up and Away and registrations begin today (Thursday, June 27). On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m., six and eight year olds are invited and on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. those aged nine to 12 meet. Weekly sign-ups are held each Friday at 10 a.m.

Our local Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is hosting a free barbecue on Saturday (June 29) from 3 to 6:30 p.m. The front-page story in last week's Chief shows the good work the branch is doing, and perhaps you will consider becoming a member.

It is really great that four local playwrights have written, directed and are acting in their plays this week at the Brackendale Art Gallery. Plan to attend Between Shifts Theatre's performances tonight, Friday and Saturday (June 27, 28 and 29) at 8 p.m. The youngest director is 16-year-old Jacob Bakes and Troy Dawson is in his early 20s. Actors include Daniel Watson, Maclean Falkins and Marilyn Mcvey. Tickets at $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors are available at the BAG and Billie's Bouquet.

It is billed as a BBQ for a Cause and will be held at the Cutters Barber Shop at 40384 Tantalus Way in Garibaldi Highlands on Saturday (June 29) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds go to the Cancer Warrior Project and it is a fundraiser with local cancer warrior Michelle Pammenter Young leading the cause. This is your chance to meet the author and learn more about her plan to distribute baskets in August to cancer patients in our area.

Father's Day (June 16) was a special time for residents at Hilltop House thanks to the entertainment provided by belly dancers Monica and Sherrie, and Rick the music man. The entertainment was much enjoyed by residents, visitors, volunteers and staff.

Exercise programs at the seniors centre will be held during July with sit and stand classes on Monday and Wednesdays from July 3 to July 31 from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. The cardio fit classes will be held each Tuesday and Thursday starting on July 2.

The Squamish Food Bank distributes grocery hampers on Wednesday (July 3) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

Winners in the Rotary 200 Club Lottery held earlier this month were: Graham Millie ($100), Brent DiMarco ($120), Ron Anderson 9$130) and Lorena McKecknie ($150).

The United Way Community Developer is hosting a community information session at the seniors centre tomorrow (Friday, June 28) from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. entitled Better at Home Program. It is designed to assist seniors to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. The annual Seniors Society Hotdog Day will be held at the seniors centre on Monday (July 8) starting at noon. This is a free event and includes hot dogs, corn and beverages. You are requested to take a small salad or dessert to share. Please sign up at the front desk.

There is no ride planned for the WOW Riders on Monday (July 1), but if a few members wish to get together and ride, please meet at Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The over the Hill Hikers meet on Tuesday (July 2) at 9 a.m. at the end of Tantalus Road for a Crouching Squirrel/Hidden Monkey hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Tantalus Walking Club meets at 10 a.m. on Thursday (July 4) at Third Avenue and Bailey (behind Save on Foods) for a Lower Swan Walk. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
