Summertime set to come alive

The Britannia Mine Museum is inviting families to celebrate Father's Day on Sunday (June 17) with a Triple Blast Family Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Regular admission fees apply.

The Lunch and Learn Series at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Wednesday (June 20) will welcome guest speaker Ellen Grant, who will share her knowledge of "Brackendale Now and Then." Mrs. Grant is a member of the pioneer Judd family and her home is the Judd property. She will also show a Squamish Historical Society video of our valley's history. The series is co-sponsored by the London Drugs Pharmacy and lunch ($6) will be served at noon and the presentation at 1 p.m. Please call Tanis at (604) 848-2000 ext. 5002 if you plan on attending.

A Mystery Author Evening will be held at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (June 18) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Four popular mystery authors Deryn Collier, Ian Hamilton, Hilary Davidson and Robin Spano will share an evening on mystery writing and readings.

Several residents at Hilltop House will celebrate birthdays this month. They include: Harvey Andrews, Irene Hurford, Lin Hewitt, Karl Koch, Elvi Nyholm, Bonita Kepfer and Alma Thackeray and the cake cutting begins at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (June 20).

The Squamish Gardeners will meet at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Monday (June 18) at 6:45 p.m. Sharon Hannah, author of the new book Book of Kale, will talk about the growing and culinary use of kale. Non-members are welcome for a $5 charge.

The 2012 Squamish Garden Tour will take place on Sunday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets for the self-guided tour are $15 and available at Anna's Attic, the Adventure Centre and the Squamish Library.

Tickets ($20) are still available for the Country Blend Concert on Monday (June 18) at 7 p.m. and Tuesday (June 19) at 10 a.m. at the Seniors Centre. Zumba Gold starts at the Centre on Wednesday (June 20) from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Zumba Gold takes the zumba formula and modifies the moves and pace to suit the needs of the active older participant. The Latin music, the easy-to-follow moves, makes it an invigorating and fun atmosphere.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (June 20) at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

Do remember to support your favourite Relay for Life team as they participate in the Squamish Relay for Life at Brennan Park on Friday, June 22, starting at 7 p.m. to Saturday (June 23) at 7 a.m.

Summer Interpretive Walks will be held each Wednesday through Sept. 12 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting from the Seniors Centre. The walks will be led by Dawn Green and the cost is $5 per walk. Food Skills for Active Seniors is a cooking program through a partnership and grant from the Canadian Diabetes Association. The six-week cooking class for seniors will teach you to prepare healthy, delicious food safely. The classes will run each Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. To sign up, please call (604) 848-6898. The next soup and sandwich day at the centre will be held on Thursday, June 28, at noon.

The celebration of the Martyrdom of the Fifth Guru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji sponsored by the Squamish Sikh Society will be held on Sunday (June 24) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It includes a street parade through downtown Squamish along with short readings/verbal presentations at the pavilion on Cleveland Avenue. Everyone is invited and a Guru Ka Langar means free food for everyone.
