EDITOR,

After 41 years in public education in British Columbia, including the past seven and a half years as Superintendent of Schools in Sea to Sky, Dr. Rick Erickson wishes to announce his retirement, effective July 31, 2011.

Dr. Erickson commented that, "Public education serves as a very important foundation of our Canadian democracy. It has been a pleasure to daily work with caring, competent and effective teachers and support staff, school and district leaders, parents and the Board of Education to improve student learning and success - to maximize each student's life opportunities. While it's been a challenging 41-year journey, I have thoroughly enjoyed working to "make a difference." To all whom I have met, and to those I have not yet had the privilege of meeting, life is such a privilege; make good use of your time and - enjoy the day!"

Prior to his arrival here in Sea to Sky, Dr. Erickson held teaching and school leadership assignments in both elementary and secondary schools, followed by district-level responsibilities in the Trail and Maple Ridge school districts.

Upon learning of Dr. Erickson's retirement, Board Chair Rick Price had the following comment to make:

"Superintendent Erickson has been a dedicated and hard-working leader for our District. He has provided the Board with valuable advice on its quest to provide the most effective education for our students. I have enjoyed working with Dr. Erickson, and will miss him. The Board of Education joins me in wishing him the very best in what is clearly a well-deserved retirement."

Rick Price

Chair, Board of Education of School District 48 (Sea to Sky)
