Swimming without communication

They say communication is key to almost everything in life. At least that's what several ex-girlfriends have told me.

They say communication is key to almost everything in life.

At least that's what several ex-girlfriends have told me.

And a little bit of communication could have gone a long way with regards to the District of Squamish and the availability of the only public swimming pool in town.

It was announced last week that the Brennan Park pool would be closed for filming from June 7 to 16. The feature film "Nautilus" was supposed to take over the pool, giving users zero access during that time.

Personally, I think it's great to see movie productions coming to Squamish. They create a nice little bump for our economy, provide locals some employment and generate excitement in town.

And I think most locals would be fine with a movie production taking over the pool for a short period of time as long as the message was delivered properly.

My colleagues and I received phone calls from a number of swimming pool users who were quite upset at the short notice given by all involved. These users only found out about the issue one week before the planned closure and were understandably a bit miffed.

The more notice given, the better.

Thankfully, District of Squamish officials made arrangements with local hotels so those who need to use the pool for rehabilitation can continue to heal in the water. Swim lesson participants were also provided alternatives and membership passholders had their cards extended by 10 days.

It all comes back to the issue of communication, an issue with which the filmmakers themselves perhaps could have helped. A quick search online of "Nautilus" points out that it's the working title of a remake of Godzilla.

The movie stars Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche and Ken Watanabe and is set for a release date in May 2014.

I don't know about anyone else, but being locked out of the pool because of a giant radioactive monster is much cooler than not being able to swim because of whatever Nautilus means. But, alas, this week the filmmakers quietly told the District that the pool was no longer required for the filming, rendering it all a moot point.

Again, communication is key.

And just like a few of my ex-girlfriends, you don't want to ever mess with (or anger) Godzilla.
