Take a hike to support hospice care

The annual Hike for Hospice will be held on Sunday (May 2) and participants are asked to meet at the parking lot across from the Adventure Centre at 9:30 a.m. for registration, with the hike starting at 10 a.m.

They will be on hand to guide the walkers and hikers. Proceeds from this event stay in the community. The draw for the beautifully crafted quilt created by the Squamish Quilting Guild will take place on Sunday.

Tomorrow (May 1) members of the Squamish Elks Lodge #119 will be very visible in the community as they take part in the annual Tag Day. Your contributions go to the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children. Those doing volunteer work in our community, the Hearing Resource Centre in Surrey and as well, the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children are also supported through other fund raising.

A great evening is planned tomorrow evening (May 1) when the fourth annual Howe Sound Women's Centre Silent Auction fundraiser is held at the Cliffside Pub starting at 5 p.m. It all begins with burger and beer (tickets $10) including the silent auction with some awesome items up for bidding. Take part in Karaoke and enjoy entertainment and dancing until 2 a.m. Remember it is all for a good cause.

Members of the Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 4) for a Ring Creek North Service Road hike. Ready to answer any questions about the hikes is Heather at 604-892-9003.

The Squamsih BMX Racing Club is having their second annual Burger and Beer fundraiser (including hot dogs and juice for the kids) on Sunday (May 2) from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Red Bench Diner This event is not just for racers as everyone is invited to attend. The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (May 5) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A Spring Market is planned at the Squamish Seniors' Centre on Thursday, May 27, from 2 to 6 p.m. Members will be selling their arts and crafts, knitting and sewing items, trinkets and treasures. Book your table now at $10 for members and $15 for non-members by dropping by the Centre any day, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you are looking after a loved one needing much care, perhaps attending a Caregivers Support Group will be of help to you. The next meeting will be held at the Seniors Centre from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (May 5). For more information, please call Donna at 604-892-6400.

Mamquam Elementary School students are holding a fundraiser dance in support of the grade seven Camp Summit trip on Friday, May 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. It will have a Retro Theme and the event will include games, prizes and concession. An invitation is extended to all District Schools in grades five, six and seven and the cost of admission is $5 each.

Drop by the Diamondhead Legion Branch #277 for an evening of bingo on Monday (May 3) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Always an interesting and fun day is attending the North Vancouver Outdoor School's Open House and this year it will be held on Sunday (May 2) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and it is located at 2170 Paradise Valley Road. Plan to visit the salmon hatchery, forest lab, Salish Bighouse, participate in paper making and crafts and much more. The jam/music circle at the Brackendale Art Gallery each month is fondly known as the GrassRoots Jam and the next session is planned for Sunday (May 2) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Organizer Rita Kyle said this is an opportunity to express yourself with acoustic music, individually or corporately in the friendly confines of the Art Gallery.

Help support the Foyer Gallery in the Squamish Public Library as the annual fundraiser Exhibit is now on display. Feast your eyes on wonders of weaving, pottery, painting, photography, jewellery and sculpture. To receive an invitation to the Foyer Gallery Soiree where your name is entered into a draw for these fine pieces of artwork, purchase a $50 ticket at the library desk (in advance or at the door). This special evening is planned on May 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and while you are supporting a great cause, enjoy delicious food, hear live music and watch live painting.

Opening night jitters are behind them and the large cast of the musical, All Shook Up as performed by students at Howe Sound Secondary School are hoping you will plan a night to attend this fun and lively musical. The show runs tonight (April 30) and Saturday (May 1) and next week from Wednesday (May 5) to Saturday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets at $12 for students/adults and $10 for seniors and children are available at Billie's Bouquet, Stylezone and at the school office.

The Pearl's 2nds store on Cleveland Avenue is run by the Howe Sound Women's Centre and today (April 30) and Saturday (May 1) a Pearl's 2nds Customer Appreciation Sale is being held. The SPCA is holding an open house and garage sale on Sunday, May 16, from noon to 3 p.m. at the SPCA shelter next to the Dog Pound. Donations of items (no clothing) in good condition would be much appreciated and you are asked to call 604-898-9890.

The historic mill building at the BC Museum of Mining at Britannia Beach is the location for the first performance of the Sea to Sky Singers spring concert entitled Deep Longing and it will be held on Friday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 8, the choir returns to St. John's Anglican Church for a 3 p.m. concert. The musical director is Veronica McPhee, along with accompanist Colleen Koop and the assistant director is Aaron Purdie. Admission is $12 adults and $10 students and seniors and tickets are available at Highlands Video, Billie's Bouquet and at the door.

Sales abound on Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when St. John's Anglican Church will hold a Spring Fling complete with plants galore, home baking and a concession stand.

On Saturday, May 8 the annual May Fair takes place at Cedar Valley Waldorf School. The event is much-anticipated over the course of the year and everyone is invited to gather 'round the May Pole, dance through the ribbons, stroll our artisan market, enjoy treats at the CVWS Café, and find out what the Spring Fairy has brought the little ones. As always there are wonderful gift ideas and children's activities for Mother's Day, as well as perennial favourites such as the fish pond, felting, silk dyeing, woodworking, Usborne and Barefoot Books and more. Also celebrated is Squamish's 2nd Annual Soup-Off. Five chefs, five soups, $5. You choose Squamish's best soup, with partial proceeds going towards Squamish's Helping Hands Society.
