Take a walk to support hospice society

The sixth annual Hike for Hospice is being held on Sunday (May 5), when you are invited to join other participants at the Station Mall for registration at 9:30 a.m. followed by the hike (walk) at 10 a.m.

The sixth annual Hike for Hospice is being held on Sunday (May 5), when you are invited to join other participants at the Station Mall for registration at 9:30 a.m. followed by the hike (walk) at 10 a.m. This is the major fundraising event for the Squamish Hospice Society and your participation, whether on the walk or in making a pledge, would be appreciated. The Squamish Hospice Society is a volunteer organization that promotes support directed toward improving the quality of life for dying, their loved ones and the bereaved in the Sea to Sky community. All funds raised will go to support local programs.

This Saturday (May 4), a Family Fun Day is planned at the Britannia Mine Museum. Join the staff for a fun-filled day including gold-panning races, chocolate-chip cookie mining, pony rides and many more family-oriented activities. Be sure to take a guided underground tour and visit the gift shop as well. Cut out the ad in The Chief and receive $5 off admission on Saturday only.

The Candy Land Spring Carnival will be held at Brackendale Elementary School tomorrow (Friday, May 3) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Check out the carnival games and silent auction and also have fun on the bouncy castle. You are encouraged to wear your sweetest outfit for Candy Land portraits by Bri Oliver of Luv U Photography.

The 11th annual Brackendale Bluegrass Festival will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (May 4). The Slow Pitch Jam is set from 3 to 5 p.m. with admission at $5. The main event at 8 p.m. features The Mountain Williams followed by The Moonshiners and the cost is $20 for adults and $10 for youth and no charge for kids under 12. Pick up tickets at Xocolatl and the BAG.

Mark your calendar for Saturday (May 11) when the annual Spring Fling will be held at St. John's Anglican Church from 9 a.m. to noon. More details next week.

Librarian Nancy Warwick will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Thursday (May 9) at 2:30 p.m. when she will have a display of interesting books for the residents to check out.

The annual Seniors Centre Society barbecue is always a popular event. It will take place at the centre on Saturday, May 25, starting at 5 p.m. As only 50 tickets will be available at $10 each, please purchase your tickets soon.

The monthly Acoustic Jam at the Brackendale Art Gallery will be held on Sunday (May 5) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and, it is always a lot of fun!

On Thursday (May 9), the monthly meeting for the Hilltop House Support Society will be held at 9:30 a.m. and members of the community are welcome to attend.

The annual Foyer Gallery Friends Soirée is being held at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (May 6) from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the library's biggest fundraiser and the purchase of a $50 sponsorship (with tax receipt) entitles you to be in the draw for original art works. Refreshments will be served during the evening.

Take in an evening of bingo at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (May 6) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

All children currently enrolled in kindergarten are invited to attend the Squamish Public Library's annual Kindergarten Reception this Friday (May 3) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. All students should have received an invitation to the fun event where there will be stories, snacks and a small gift from the Friends of the Library. Everyone is encouraged to wear their pajamas.

New programs at the Seniors Centre include beginner photography on Mondays at 7 p.m., watercolour and drawing classes, and Bosu Body Blast on Tuesdays and the co-ed biking group rides are each Wednesday from the centre at 10 a.m.

The WOW Riders meet at 10 a.m. on Monday (May 6) at Canadian Tire for a ride downtown, either through the golf course trails or the Loggers Lane commuter trail. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the corner of Ross and Government roads on Tuesday (May 7) at 9 a.m. for a Hut Lake hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-2093.

The annual North Vancouver Outdoor School Open House is this Sunday (May 5) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It is a family fun day with a visit to the Salish Bighouse, farm animals, the forest lab, canoeing, paper making and more.
