Editor's note: This is a letter that was sent to a teacher at Howe Sound Secondary School. It was copied to The Chief for publication.
Dear teacher,
I am thrilled and impressed by your, and your colleagues', professionalism during this very difficult period. We just got here from N.B. in the fall and in the six years my children attended school there, I can't say that I even got one email from a teacher. Since being at Howe Sound Secondary, I have had teachers check up on my child's attendance, I've gotten updates on her progress, I've had several phone conversations with teachers with very good results. I know from the teacher what is expected for the semester and I feel very confident that any of my concerns would be met with care and consideration. May I add as well that these contacts were not initiated by me.
I just received a letter from the school board and in it, the superintendent alludes to the idea that our children are missing out and that parents are in the dark. I can only speak for myself but I feel that my daughter is being well cared for and that her teachers are interested in her success despite their own professional issues. What better way for a 15-year-old to learn about the real world than to be a part of it. She is learning about rebellion in social studies right now and she and I have discussed how history may or may not have rewritten the true facts I think it's paramount to be in the middle of any issue so you can see both sides of a story for yourself.
As parents, sometimes we have to make difficult decisions that affect our children, my husband and I have adopted a motto, "Do what you have to do, let the children know what's going on and they will be just fine."
