EDITOR,
On Saturday (March 15), I went to Nexen Beach and had the pleasure of witnessing the large pod of visiting dolphins as they jumped and splashed their way up and down the channel. All sorts of visitors and residents of a kind that used to frequent the waters of Howe Sound are returning, including dolphins, whales, salmon and herring. This is a very fragile situation. We had best think very carefully about what we agree to and tolerate when it comes to the health of our local ecosystem. Are we prepared to bargain it away in exchange for convenience, jobs, and economic benefits despite having already learned hard lessons about what can happen when we do not act responsibly? It's easy to focus on the picture of a pod of lively dolphins when immediately in the background are such things as sinking tugboats, derelict vessels, raw sewage, and fuel leaks. The dolphins have sent us a message. We should not ignore it.
