The stars come out tonight

Up and coming young talented musicians, singers and dancers are ready to compete in the 2009 Star Search event at the Eagle Eye Theatre tonight (May 22) at 7 p.m.

Up and coming young talented musicians, singers and dancers are ready to compete in the 2009 Star Search event at the Eagle Eye Theatre tonight (May 22) at 7 p.m. The sponsors, the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association promise a program that will entertain and amaze the audience and make many parents and grandparents very proud of the performers. Tickets are available at $8 at Billie's Bouquet and $10 if purchased at the door.

The HSPAA offers financial assistance through its AME (Access Music Education) and the bursary application deadline is June 15. The assistance is available to Squamish students planning to attend a summer music program and/or take private lessons in the coming academic year. Bursaries are awarded on the basis of individual commitment to studies and financial need. Application forms are available from the HSPAA website - www.howesoundarts.ca.

The annual May Fair Festival at the Cedar Valley Waldorf School is being held tomorrow (May 23) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school at 38265 Westway in Valleycliffe. There are many activities for children including May Pole dancing and adults will enjoy checking out the artisan craft displays, plants, bake table, books and refreshments offered. A raffle is also being held with great prizes.

Join the Cedar Valley Waldorf School's teacher Andie Flett Wednesday (May 27) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 38265 Westway Avenue for an introduction to Grade One. See the classroom and learn how the Waldorf curriculum engages the whole child: head, hands and heart, to create independent thinkers with a genuine love of learning.

The SPCA Mobile Adoption-unit comes to Bosley's Pet Food Plus at Squamish Station Mall Saturday (May 23) from noon to 3 p.m. Come and visit some of the kittens and small animals that are ready for adoption.

The Adult Evening Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Thursday (May 28) from 7 to 8 p.m. when the book "The Birth House" by Ami Mckay will be discussed. Read the book and join the group!

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Government and Ross Roads on Tuesday (May 26) at 9 a.m. and will travel to Whistler for a Lost Lake Loop hike. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Coins for Life is an event benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society and is sponsored by Team Pura Vida and Pepe and Gringo's on Tuesday (May 26) form 5:30 to 9 p.m. Kids eat by donation from a kid-friendly buffet and ten percent of all adults sales will be donated by Pepe and Gringos to the Relay for Life team. There will be a silent auction and 50/50 draw. Donations of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt.

The Mother's Day raffle sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital was drawn at the hospital on May 8. The winners were: Arnie Kermeen ($250), Jaswinder Bhandal ($175), and Harvey Braun ($100). The WA thanks the community for their continued support and to Save-On-Foods, Wal-Mart and Nesters Market where tickets were sold.

There is a Garage Sale at Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue tomorrow (May 23) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Along with some great bargains to be had, there will also be a bake table.

Memberships for the new Squamish Senior Centre will be available this weekend as volunteers will be at Save-On-Foods until 8 p.m. tonight (May 22) and at Wal-Mart tomorrow and Sunday (May 23 and 24) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual membership good until Dec. 2010 is $25 each but if you are a member of the Tantalus Seniors Centre or Squamish Seniors Branch No. 70 the fee will be $20. Seniors 90 years and up will receive honourary memberships. There will be information available on other ways to contribute to the new Centre.

The Squamish Elks Lodge is collecting aluminium tabs from pop and beer cans and if you have any to contribute, please call Peter at 604-898-9366 by May 29. Proceeds from all over the province help buy equipment for the many camps for children.

Check out the ad in this issue of The Chief regarding the Carnival coming to town next week from Thursday (May 28) to Sunday, May 31. It is sponsored by the Squamish Elks Lodge and it will be a fun time for all the family. It will be held next to the Adventure Centre.

The Squamish Emergency Program (SEP) is having a fundraiser at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company on Friday, May 29 starting at 7 p.m. Dave Norona and elite endurance athlete is showing and adventure film. There will also be a silent auction with some great items available. Tickets are available at the Howe Sound Inn at the front desk and at Chef Big D's Restaurant.

The monthly Soup and Sandwich Day at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre is Thursday (May 28) starting at 11:30 a.m.

A fun time is guaranteed for families or individuals taking part in A Day Out With Thomas at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on the weekends of June 6 and 7 and June 13 and 14 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on each of these days. You will go on a 25-minute ride with a full size Thomas the Tank Engine and have a chance to meet Sir Topham Hatt. Storytelling, building with Lego bricks, live music and more are in store for all.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre runs Pearl's 2nds, a second hand store located on Cleveland Avenue. There is a need for more volunteers to keep the store open form Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It (the store) is a major fundraiser for the Women's Centre and it also helps many people in our community. The Brennan Park Recreation Centre has an Outdoor Gear and Sports Swap tomorrow (May 23) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
