Time for the Test

Our town is going to be filled with many visitors this weekend as the annual Test of Metal takes place tomorrow (June 19) and for the first time, the Royal Canadian Legion Highland Gathering will be held in Squamish at Brennan Park.

Before the parade in downtown Squamish tomorrow morning there will be an inspection of each band in the Chieftain Centre Mall and the first band will probably leave the mall onto Pemberton Avenue and then right onto Cleveland Avenue about 8:45 a.m. Each band will march to Stan Clarke Park (across from the old pavilion site). Then the bands will return down Cleveland Avenue in one block. It should be spectacular! The opening ceremony at Brennan Park begins at 11 a.m. followed by band and games competitions.

Folks planning to go to Brennan Park for the Highland Gathering are advised to take the turn off at Highway 99 before the Mamquam Bridge as Logger's Lane will be filled with Test of Metal competitors tomorrow morning.

Father's Day is Sunday (June 20) and the B.C. Museum of Mining at Britannia Beach has free admission to dad when accompanied by a child and each dad gets a mine tour free of charge. For children six to 12 years the tour is $11.95 and for those 13 to 18 years of age the price is $13.95. Yukon Dan the "gold panning man" will be on site and is looking forward to meeting youngsters. The Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (June 21) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library to finalize plans for the Garden Tour. Physiotherapist Heidi Drygas will give a short presentation on stretches for gardeners to avoid injury.

Do plan on attending the Strawberry Tea at Hilltop House tomorrow (June 19) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Delicious strawberry shortcake and coffee or tea are $4 each. As well, there will be a bake table, an assortment of crafts and a 50/50 draw. This event takes place in the new addition to Hilltop House.

It is Hot Dog Day at the Seniors' Centre on Thursday (June 24) at 12 noon when members will enjoy free hot dogs and corn on the cob. Please take along a favourite salad, fruit, cookies or other goodies.

A Nordic Walking (urban poling) workshop will be held at the Seniors' Centre on Wednesday (June 23) at 12:30 p.m. Urban poling also called Nordic walking uses a technique similar to cross country skiing. It turns walking into a total body workout and is proven to be more beneficial than walking. Poles will be available to try out and purchase.

If the weather co-operates, the WOW riders plan a ride to Alice Lake (take a lunch) on Monday (June 21) and everyone is asked to meet at Canadian Tire at 10 a.m. Some will ride back via Jack's trail while others will return through Brackendale. The Squamish Environment Society is hosting a presentation entitle Urban Critters and it will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Wednesday (June 23) at 7 p.m. Come and learn more about the critters around us - coyotes, bears, cougars and bobcats and the conflicts that arise when man and nature collide. Everyone is welcome to stay for the general membership meeting following the presentation. This is a great opportunity to find out more about the society and meet others who are interested in protecting the natural world around us.

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the Smoke Bluffs parking lot for a Smoke Bluffs hike on Tuesday (June 22) at 9 a.m. If you wish more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is a busy place this weekend and on Sunday (June 20) everyone is invited to the Family Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. For $5 each you tuck into pancakes, eggs, ham, sausages with coffee or juice and for $7 you get the big hungry man's special. Drop by the Legion on Monday (June 21) for an evening of Bingo when doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Tantalus Seniors' Walking Club will meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company at 10 a.m. on Thursday (June 24) fro an estuary walk. Joyce at 604-898-5594 has more information.

The online Teen Summer Reading Club returns this year to the Squamish Public Library with the theme Get Into Character. For more information, visit the website at www.teenrc.ca. The Adult Evening Book will meet on Thursday (June 24) at 7 p.m. in the meeting room to discuss the book Anybody Out There? by Marian Keyes.

The Squamish Sikh Society will celebrate the martyrdom of the Fifth Guru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji next Saturday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a street parade through downtown Squamish at the pavilion site in downtown Squamish. Everyone is invited and free food will be provided.

Following the hot dog lunch at the Seniors' Centre on Thursday (June 24) at 1 p.m. master gardener Melissa Geddes will discuss your gardening questions and she will also share her knowledge about new plants and the latest gardening trends.

A free Community Forum on food distribution in the Sea to Sky Corridor will be held at the Squamish Public Library on Monday (June 21) from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. For more information, please call Karen Clarke at 604-815-6855 or [email protected].

The Squamish 2010 Garden Tour will be held on Sunday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a self-guided tour of 10 local area gardens and this year extending to Britannia Beach and Furry Creek. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Squamish Public Library, Billie's Bouquet, Anna's Attic, Garibaldi Nurseries, the Village Green Garden Centre and the Adventure Centre.

Former resident and major developer of the Garibaldi Estates and Garibaldi HIghlands, Pat Goode of Fort Langley passed away recently. Our sympathy is extended to his family.

Attention all readers! The Squamish Public Library will again be offering a summer reading club to school aged children this summer. This year's theme is Reading Rocks. Come out on June 29 from 12 to 4 p.m. to register your children, pick up your reading records, and find out about all the fun events that are planned. It's a great opportunity for children to continue their reading over the summer. The library will also continue to offer pre-school programs for the summer. Check online or come in to get a summer schedule. This year we will have special preschool reading record for the little ones.
