'Walk a Mile' for a good cause

Tomorrow (Sept. 17) is the day the third annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser is held in support of the prevention of violence against women.

Tomorrow (Sept. 17) is the day the third annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser is held in support of the prevention of violence against women. It is sponsored by the Howe Sound Women's Centre on Third Avenue and the walk will start from there at 11 a.m. to Cleveland Avenue and back to the centre. There is still time for more guys to get fitted in their bright red shoes and make a minimum $40 pledge. Family and friends are urged turn out and give the guys encouragement on their walk.

Another great cause tomorrow (Sept. 17) is the food drive sponsored by the Squamish Food Bank. Volunteers will be canvassing the community asking for donations of non-perishable food items. The need is great and your contribution would be much appreciated.

This weekend the 2011 High School Reunion will bring together students who graduated in 1993 back to 1967 in Squamish. The fun-filled weekend will be held at the Totem Hall. A warm welcome to former students with many of them coming from locations in Canada and the United States. The last reunion was held five years ago when the late and well-loved Dr. LaVerne Kindree was the guest of honour.

A free public screening and discussion on the film The Remaining Light will be held in the Seniors Centre at 1201 Village Green Way on Tuesday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m. The Remaining Light is a documentary film that journeys through an often-invisible part of Canada's health care system - the community-based services that provide care to seniors as they age and die. The Remaining Light is set in British Columbia, where the province's ombudsperson has recently completed an investigation into the province's seniors care system.

Many residents of Hilltop House will celebrate birthdays this month on Wednesday (Sept. 21) at 2 p.m. Those to be honoured include: Mary Crowston, Gladys Wood, Eva Troeber, Michael Nagy-Deak, Dorothy Zimmerman, Jean Hodgkinson, Marvin Pascal, Clifford Grand and Earl Cannon.

The Women's Health Network, The Howe Sound Women's Centre and the Squamish Public Library are pleased to welcome Kamal S. Dhillon, author of the book Black and Blue Sari, to the library on Thursday (Sept. 22) from 7 to 9 p.m. Her story and message is one that will affect you, disturb you, enrage you and will open your eyes to the reality and severity of domestic violence. The Healthy Brain Group for Older Adults will meet at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Avenue on Tuesday (Sept. 20) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. For those wishing more information, please contact Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

Pearl's 2nds on Cleveland Avenue has extended its hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For anyone interested in helping out, volunteer training is available and forms can be picked up at the store. Proceeds from this spacious, new store go to the Howe Sound Women's Centre and the many programs and support offered to women in our community.

There is still room on the bus for seniors wanting to go to the Edgewater Casino trip on Wednesday (Sept. 28). If you don't wish to gamble, the casino is near the Rogers Arena and you can shop in Yaletown or take a little boat to Granville Island. For more information, please call Elaine at (604) 898-5463.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors on Wednesday (Sept. 21) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alano Club on Third Avenue for grocery distribution.

Bingo is back at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Sept. 19) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The guest speaker at the first annual Multi-Faith Celebration to be held at St. John's Anglican Church on Sept. 24 is Robert Worcester. He is past president of the Vancouver MultiFaith Action Society, co-chair of the EcoJustice Unit, Diocese of New Westminster and a member of the Council of Elders of the David Suzuki Foundation. The new book club at the Squamish Public Library will be discussing books with the theme of personal growth. The first gathering will be held on Tuesday (Sept. 20) from 7 to 8 p.m. to discuss Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.

A Tribute to the Legends of Country Music concert will be held in the Seniors Centre on Wednesday (Sept. 21) and be performed by the Country Blend. Tickets are $22 each and available at the centre or call (604) 848-6898 to reserve your tickets.

Some of the WOW group will still be on the Kettle Valley ride so those who can, please meet at the Canadian Tire at 10 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 19) and do a ride to the Nexen Lands.

On Tuesday (Sept. 20) at 9 a.m., the Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the Brohm Lake parking lot for a Brohm Lake to the Tenderfoot Hatchery hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
