We are fortunate to have so many fine candidates running for council this year. But one candidate, Peter Kent, stands head and shoulders above the rest. On Nov. 15 I’m voting for Peter for Squamish Council. I encourage others to do the same.
I, like many, came to Squamish because I cherish the natural beauty here. I moved here with my family after 22 years in Banff so it was no easy choice. I feel blessed to live in a place like Squamish, teeming with fish and wildlife, where whales and dolphins visit our waters, bald eagles flock, and grizzly and black bears roam. But I have grown increasingly concerned about Squamish’s future. I worry that unplanned development, out-of-town corporate interests and lack of vision could destroy what makes Squamish so special.
We need a councillor like Peter Kent to fight for Squamish. Peter was the first candidate to publicly declare his opposition to the proposed Woodfibre LNG plant because he realizes how devastating the project would be to Howe Sound and the estuary. He will work to ensure the Oceanfront project includes strict environmental protections, creates a vibrant community of small businesses, parks, a boardwalk, art galleries, live theatre and more amenities, and becomes the showcase of Squamish. Peter will strive to bring good-paying jobs to our town so that our economy grows strong, diverse and sustainable. And he’ll push for a more transparent, open government that engages and empowers the people.
I plan to vote for Peter Kent on election day because I believe in him.
