What happened to zero tolerance

Editor,

I felt that I had to voice my opinion after watching the news and seeing Zoe Aldridge speaking about what happened to her 14 year old son at Don Ross Secondary.

It is my understanding that School District 48 has a zero tolerance approach for bullying. And respectively having said that you would think that if your child is being bullied they would tell their parents, teachers, principal, etc. in hope that something positive would happen to resolve all conflict.

What happened in this situation that the school failed to protect these children? If there is in fact a zero tolerance approach to bullying, then why did the school do nothing to prevent this from happening?

We raise our children to tell us if there is anything wrong, and it is our legal and moral responsibility to protect our children. I would believe that the same thing is true about our schools, teachers and principals.

They owe our children the duty of care to keep them safe, to teach them how to deal with social conflict, and help them figure out ways to deal with negative issues.

It absolutely blows my mind that this boy, did everything he was taught to do when someone bully's you. And in return the school does nothing, and not to mention the fact that the video of the attack was deleted by a member of the school faculty, removing all evidence the police would have of this attack.

What were you the faculty at Don Ross Secondary thinking? How have you helped any of these kids?

You have now just shown this boy that doing the right thing doesn't work. Telling someone you need help just becomes ignored.

Is that the message we should be sending our children?
