EDITOR,

Canada Day is local.

All you have to do is get into the celebration in a place such as Squamish to appreciate that, as I did this past Canada Day.

It's the novel little touch, like the people of Squamish creatinga Canadian flag out of red cupcakes and white cupcakes, displayed on toothpicks and arrangedin just the perfect layout.

It's dogs and kids everywhere, frolicking freely.

It's bands and music and balloons.

The localness of the celebration brings it "down home."But the speeches, the images, the history, and the anthem bring Canadians together with unknown countrymen and countrywomen, from around our great nation.

National stories unfold through the media, often through "newsmakers" whose names are broadly known. But nations are woven together by thousands of little unheralded acts and words of community that the media never report, like the acts and words of graciousness and unity especially evident on Canada Day, that make our True North truly strong and free.
