Wine, whiskers, music planned at BAG

Ana Santos is having a Spanish paella fundraiser at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (June 16) starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds will go to improving learning opportunities for kids at the Reconnect Alternative Programs (RAP) in Squamish and Mount Currie. Tickets are $50 each and available at the BAG and the evening includes: tapas, paella, salad, sangria, dessert and live music.

This evening (Thursday, June 13), the Squamish Public Library will welcome local travel writer and journalist Arno Kopecky at 6:30 p.m., when he will share stories and images from South America. He has also written his first book, The Devil's Curve, that he will share with everyone in attendance.

A fun evening is planned at the Brackendale Art Gallery tomorrow evening (Friday, June 14) when the SPCA fundraiser Whiskers and Wine is ongoing from 7 to 10 p.m. For your $25 ticket, you will enjoy wine, appies and dessert. The entertainment will feature the local band The Blinking Fish and young Brackendale fiddler Michael Kilby. Tickets are available at the BAG, the SPCA shelter, Eagle View and Garibaldi vet clinics and Paw in Hand.

The Cygnus Trio, including former Squamish residents Ben and Jonathan Stuchbury as well as Jasper Meiklejohn, are set for a "homecoming" musical performance featuring works from baroque to jazz classics at St. John's Anglican Church on Sunday, June 23. Admission to the event, organized by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association, is by donation. A reception and dessert take place at 1 p.m. and the concert begins at 1:30 p.m.

The Squamish Youth Resource Centre has a "Youth Booth" each week at the Farmers' Market and the young people are selling homemade candles, postcards (photos taken by the youth), greeting cards and homemade dog treats. Invest Right - Be Fraud Aware is a free workshop at the seniors centre on Tuesday (June 18) from 1 to 2 p.m. The workshop will provide a wide range of tools to help investors develop the critical thinking skills needed to protect against fraud. Learn about all types of scams, tips on how to spot fraud warning signs, and how to report a scam. The workshop is hosted by the B.C. The Squamish Trails Society meeting is next Thursday (June 20) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building and not tonight! For more information, please call Penny at (604) 898-5385.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (June 19) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Another interesting activity for seniors is the Celebrating Our Lives Older Adult Group and the next gathering will be on Thursday (June 20) from 10 to 11 a.m. in the seniors centre. The Squamish Volunteer Centre Society and Sea to Sky Freenet Association will have its annual general meeting on Monday (June 17) at 10 a.m. in the Hotspot Community Resource Centre, 38027 Cleveland Ave.

The monthly birthday tea at Hilltop House will be held on Wednesday (June 19) at 2 p.m. and those to be honoured include: Harvey Andrews, Lin Hewitt, Karl Koch, Anky Lens, Bonita Kepfer and Alma Thackeray.

Tips, tricks and tools on how to manage arthritis will be shared in a two-hour session at the seniors centre on Saturday (June 22) from 3 to 5 p.m. Celine Cantin, an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, will share her knowledge and discuss assistive devices and ideas to make living with arthritis manageable. A night of bingo is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (June 17) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Hilltop House staff sends a special thank you to the children at the Waldorf School for the play they presented on June 6. In the evening, Tom and Paul from Precision Optical came and adjusted eyeglasses for some of the residents. The staff also appreciates Gordon and Odette for cleaning up around the courtyard area.

A Social Tennis Club is ongoing at the seniors centre each Monday at 10 a.m. from June to August. It is open to all abilities - come with a partner or you will be paired up. Have your own racket and sign in at the front desk when you arrive. The theme June luncheon at the centre on Aug. 27 is a summer barbecue menu with burgers, summer salads and delicious dessert. Please purchase tickets ($9 members, $10 non-members) by Wednesday (June 26).

The WOW Riders meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. on Monday (June 17) for car pooling to Granville Island, weather permitting. Otherwise, the group will do a local ride into Valleycliffe. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Squamish Gardeners meet at 6:45 p.m. on Monday (June 17) at the Sandman Inn to wrap up details of the 2013 Garden Tour on June 23. Carol Anderson will speak about growing and displaying succulents.
