Winter Farmers' Market brings back the goods

The Squamish Winter Farmers' Market will take place at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre on Sunday (Jan. 15) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Squamish Renaissance Residence at 3825 Third Ave. is beginning another Lunch and Learn Series sponsored by London Drugs. On Wednesday (Jan. 18) the theme will be Understanding Dementia and the speaker will be Kerri Sutherland, support and education coordinator from the Alzheimer Society of B.C. On Sunday (Jan. 15) the Squamish Environmental Society will hold its monthly bird count. Members are asked to be at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 8 a.m.

The group will be looking for over-wintering ducks such as goldeneyes and mergansers. Fewer ducks have been spotted these past few months. For more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (Jan. 16) at 6:45 p.m. at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park at 6:45 p.m. There will be a question-and-answer session and general discussion about gardening, so bring your questions and expertise. Brian Minter will be the keynote speaker in February and more information will be provided closer to the event.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (Jan. 18) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for grocery distribution.

Six residents at Hilltop House will celebrate birthdays this month and to be honoured on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at 2 p.m. are Marilyn Williams, Jean McKinnon, Peg Sutter, Bill Manson, Harold Peterson and George Huxtable.

The Squamish Public Library will welcome local author Mike Underwood to the library on Thursday (Jan. 19) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. as he launches his new book Temporal Effect.

The annual general meeting for the Brackendale Owners' and Tenants' Association will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at the Easter Seals camp. Organizers say people are needed to speak up for improvements in flood protection, transportation concerns and keeping development proposals in check. It will also ensure that the neighbourhood remains a desirable place to be and protect the value of their investments. Lesley Keith will also make a presentation about the history of Brackendale.

A concert benefitting the Howe Sound Music Festival (HSMF) entitled Inspiration will feature an hour-long recital providing an engaging variety of music from music teachers and past HSMF success stories. It will be held at St. John's Anglican Church on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. and admission is by donation. Children, students and music lovers of all ages are sure to enjoy the vocal and piano selections spanning classical, musical theatre and jazz genres.

The Squamish Hospice Society invites those who have suffered the loss of a loved one to join the Bereavement Walking Program. Walks are planned for Wednesdays (Jan. 18 and 25) and also on Feb. 1. Join the walk with two trained hospice volunteers and coffee afterwards if you choose. Walks will begin at 10 a.m. at the Squamish Adventure Centre and it would be appreciated if you would pre-register by calling Kirsten Walter at (604) 898-0757. If there is enough interest, these walks will continue for the next few weeks.

Howe Sound Women's Centre 30th Anniversary Gala on Sunday (April 14) will feature keynote speaker Stephen Lewis on Women. Influence. Our World! The special evening will take place in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Mr. Lewis is not only a phenomenal speaker and humanitarian, but was named one of the world's most powerful feminists by Forbes Magazine in 2010.

Those who purchase tickets before Monday (Jan. 16) will receive a $20 discount. The regular price for the first four rows is $100 or sale price $80 and general admission is $75 and discount $55. When you purchase a ticket, you will be helping to raise money for women and children in our corridor.

Many programs are starting at the Seniors Centre next week. Beginner Computer classes begin Monday (Jan. 16) at 1 p.m. Quilting classes begin on Tuesday (Jan. 17) at 10 a.m. On Wednesday (Jan. 18), a Heritage Photo Albums and Photo Preservation starts at 1 p.m. and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Evening Dance lessons begin. A foot care and reflexology clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19). Members price $34 and non-members $40 and you are asked to book a time at the front desk. The knitting circle begins on Thursday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m.

Soup and sandwich day at the Seniors Centre is Thursday, Jan. 26, at noon. Purchase your tickets early and be entered into the early bird draw.

Bingo is back at the Royal Canadian Branch #277 on Monday (Jan. 16) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Cherry Drive in Valleycliffe on Tuesday (Jan. 17) at 9 a.m. for a Five Point Hill Hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
