This evening (Thursday, Jan. 23) from 6 to 8 p.m. the Howe Sound Women's Centre in partnership with the Squamish Public Library is offering a Women's Self-Defence workshop led by Sami Gustafson. An informative article in last week's issue of The Chief by reporter Rebecca Aldous gave a real eye-opener into the life of Gustafson and what she is now able to share in these self-defence workshops.

Members of Between Shifts Theatre's performance of the Calendar Girls last spring was a big hit and the cast has bared all for the new calendar now on sale. Please know the monies raised will go to Hilltop House worker Sher Paligutan, who recently won a battle with leukemia. Calendars are available at The Chief office on Second Avenue for $20 each. Please get behind this fundraiser as it is for a great cause and of course, enjoy the photos.

The theme luncheon at the Squamish Seniors Centre will definitely have a Scottish flavour to the menu on Thursday (Jan. 30) at 11:45 a.m. with bangers (sausage) and mash (potatoes) and trifle to be served. Please pick up tickets at $9 for members and $10 for non-members by Wednesday (Jan. 29). Nancy Warwick from the Squamish Public Library will have a display of books on hand for seniors to peruse on Jan. 30.

We all know the good work and volunteer hours of the Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital and this week I am pleased to let you know where some of the funds raised are used. The WA is purchasing for the hospital an infant resuscitator, a small ventilator to help newborns breathe immediately after birth at a cost $5,000. The WA has also purchased a blanket warmer for post-operative patients for $8,500, and an Evenflow intravenous fluid warmer for patients in the operating room and the cost is $3,200. The funds are raised through two raffles during the year and income from the gift shop. It goes without saying that the support of the community is much appreciated.
