Women's theatre invitation issued

St. John's Anglican Church is hosting the next in its series of debates on Saturday (Feb. 16). Dustin Eno, a fourth-year student at Quest U., and Adrian Juric, a writer, educator, retreat leader and professional counselor, will argue the pro side of the topic "Be it resolved that digital social networks are detrimental to quality human relationships." Fourth-year Quest student Michael Luba and Jonathan Christian, creator of We Make Stuff Happen, which helps businesses and non-profit groups tell their story online, will argue the con side. Moderating the discussion is Chief reporter Rebecca Aldous. The event occurs on Saturday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the church, 1930 Diamond Road. Admission is a $5 donation at the door.

Many residents at Hilltop House have birthdays this month and the gathering will be held on Wednesday (Feb. 20) at 2 p.m. Congratulations to: Marc Griffin, Dawn Fisher, Hugh MacPherson, Belle Carson, Viola Parvin, Lorraine Jordan and Delvina Phaneuf.

On Thursday (Feb. 21) at 6:30 p.m. the Sea to Sky Women's Health Network and the Squamish Public Library present "Enhance Your Life Using the Law of Attraction." This event at the library will be led by Sarah Tambosso of Leash on Life Coaching and Consulting. Learn how to get more of what you want and less of what you don't.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet at the Sandman Inn on Monday (Feb. 18) at 6:45 p.m. The speakers will be Nico and Linda Verbeek, members of the Alpine Garden Club of B.C., whose objectives are to promote the propagation and display of plants suitable for alpine gardens and to promote interest in native B.C. plants.

Squamish Hospice Society is continuing the Bereavement Walking Group on Tuesdays, meeting at 9:45 a.m. The walk starts at 10 at the Squamish Adventure Centre. It's a chance to walk and talk at a relaxed pace with two hospice volunteers and others who are grieving. You are welcome to join for coffee after. The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (Feb. 20) for grocery distribution from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Squamish Elementary School students in kindergarten and Grade 1 will be coming to the Seniors Centre on Tuesday (Feb. 19) from 2 to 2:45 p.m. to spend time with seniors who will read books to them. The Hotspot and the Seniors Centre have partnered to provide free one-on-one computer tutoring for seniors on the first and third Wednesday of the month between 1 and 3 p.m. Laptops are provided or bring your own. Please register at the front desk.

Deanna Knight and the Hot Club of Mars will be onstage at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 8 p.m. Tickets at $12 each are available at Xocolatl and at the gallery.

The Squamish Historical Society (SHS) is presenting the next 2013 Speaker Series at the Brackendale Art Gallery tonight (Thursday, Feb. 14) at 7 p.m. Trevor Mills, a local railway history buff, will talk on "The Importance of the Railway to the Development of Squamish." He is a very knowledgeable guy and it will be an interesting evening. Admission is by donation.

There is always an interesting array of gift-giving ideas and items and items for babies and toddlers at the Gift Shop at the Squamish Hospital and the Women's Auxiliary volunteer at the shop Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A bingo night is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Feb. 18) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Ageless Adventure Tours will give a free presentation at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Feb. 21) from 1 to 3 p.m. Information will be given on future bus tours, excursions and field trips.

The monthly luncheon at the Seniors Centre on Feb. 28 will be a Chinese New Year theme menu complete with egg rolls, vegetable chow mein, rice, sweet-and-sour meatballs, beef and broccoli and for dessert, raisin pudding. Please pre-purchase your tickets at $9 each.

Plan to take in the Winter Farmers' Market in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Sunday (Feb. 17) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The West Coast Railway Heritage Park is planning a series of special displays and workshops to mark Heritage Week, Feb. 18 to 24. They include exhibits and workshops focusing on aboriginal skills and crafts, knitting, weaving, spinning, woodworking and heritage technology.
