You can go home again

I’m back. To be clear, I’ve been around but my name hasn’t appeared in the pages of the Squamish Chief as a contributor for the past nine years. We’ve all heard the saying that you can’t go home again.

I’m back.

To be clear, I’ve been around but my name hasn’t appeared in the pages of the Squamish Chief as a contributor for the past nine years.
We’ve all heard the saying that you can’t go home again. I’m living proof that the theory doesn’t work in all cases.

My decision to leave The Chief in 2005 was prompted by an opportunity to check out the world of marketing and sales. I’m glad I tried it.
Marketing got a bit dull so when a friend suggested she had the perfect job for me with VANOC, I had to get onto the Olympic Winter Games bandwagon in the months leading up to the big sporting spectacle of 2010.

When the circus left town and the expiry date on my job left me wondering what I was going to do, I looked back over my work experiences and concluded the most rewarding work I have ever done is reporting the news.

Pique Newsmagazine had a place for me shortly after the Games. It quickly started to feel like home there.

I’m now happily declaring myself the “King of All Sea to Sky Media” as Mountain FM morning news anchor, Chief columnist and multi-media reporter with Glacier Media, the parent company to this paper and many other fine publications.

But, that’s enough about me.

I now know better than ever that it isn’t really about me and, in truth, it is all about you.

When I started as a broadcast journalist in Squamish in August 1990, reporting was a one-way street. I delivered and you simply ingested what I had for you. With our current level of sophistication many people have a level of media understanding that is much greater now compared to when I first got into the news business here.

My media bosses have given me an amazing opportunity to communicate with you over multiple delivery systems. I’m truly honoured by that.

I feel I have a huge responsibility and I intend to reflect your community back to you in consultation with those who want to be part of the conversation through the multiple modern communication tools used today.

These are exciting times for Squamish and I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on current issues. I have much to share about our community’s big issues, like LNG, the future of our waterfront, the tourism industry, affordable housing and poverty. The words I crank out will be produced on a two-way street because in 2014 it is easier than ever for you to shape opinion on the issues.

You can connect with me and share thoughts through Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus.

Your opinion is important, no matter what that opinion is and no matter what it is formed by. It really is all about you and the community we share.

I’m back, I‘m home and I care so much that some days it hurts.
