The Squamish Polar Bear Swim at Newport Beach saw about 75 revellers dash into the icy waters of Howe Sound at noon on Jan. 1, 2020. It was one of the biggest turnouts in the more than a decade of swims at Squamish's oceanfront, according to organizer Mike Wright. This year, the tide was higher than other years, covering the sandy beach and forcing swimmers to jump into the water from the cement blocks along the shore and dodge rocks and logs once in the water. But there were smiles all around and a roaring bonfire warmed up participants after the event. Photos by David Buzzard/For The Chief
