Give them the axe

Squamish Axemen rugby team defeats Chilliwack
1

Squamish’s Axemen rugby club defeated Chilliwack 57-0, which grants the local team a spot in the Division 3 finals.

The Axemen attained nine tries. Two for Jack Couzens; two for Lewis Stockton, and one each for Jackson McEvoy, Neil Irwin, Blake Mahovic, Oli Watts and Frazer McGaw.

Irwin kicked six conversions.

“The match was a tight contest for the opening 20 minutes, with both sides looking to dominate,” manager and player Cian Starogardzki told The Chief.

“But it was the Axemen pack that came out on top.”

Starogardzki said the Squamish team kept pressing hard during the second half.

“The Axemen, having worn down the stubborn Chilliwack defence, stuck to their structure and reaped the rewards,” he said. “With more space as the opposition tired, quick hands and hard running led to more tries, nine in all.”

The Axemen will have their next match at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club this Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

They’ll be looking to bury the hatchet against Richmond in the Division 3 finals.
