Jamie Cudmore started playing rugby in Squamish as a youth. Later, he would credit the game with saving his life.

A Squamite who’s made a big name for himself in the world of ruby has announced his retirement.

Jamie Cudmore, a player with France’s Oyannax club, said that his team’s final game this season will also be his last.

“Amazing way to finish my playing career in France,” he said in an Instagram post.

Cudmore’s rise has been well-documented in the media.

As a troubled teen, Cudmore found an outlet for his energy by joining a previous version of the Squamish Axemen.

Later, he would credit the game for saving his life.

After leaving Canada, he hit rugby pitches in New Zealand and Wales before moving to France to play in the country’s Top 14, a division of the 14 best teams in the league operated by the French National Rugby League.

Since then, he has remained in the country with his wife, Jennifer, daughter Maelle and son Grayson.

With professional rugby having a bigger profile in France, Cudmore also became a widely recognized figure in the country.

However, the 38-year-old also appears to have been preparing for a life off the pitch, having told The Chief last year of his business ventures.

He and his wife have started up their own brand of wine, Sin Bin, a reference to rugby’s version of the penalty box.

Playing off the colours of penalty cards, the business crafts what it calls yellow and red card wines.

Before his venture into making drinks, Cudmore and a few other rugby players started up a nightclub, which was later sold.
