Squamish fighter Cole 'Cole Train' Smith has signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, making him the first athlete from town to ascend to the highest level of competition in mixed martial arts.

The 30-year-old bantamweight fighter made the announcement on April 10.

"I'm ready to make some waves — let's do it," said Smith on Instagram.

With his professional record at 6-0, Smith has been rumoured to be a prospect for the premiere fighting league for some time now.

Much of Smith's victories were in the Battlefield Fight League, B.C.'s highest-profile MMA league.

He has repeatedly defended his title with convincing wins.

Smith trains with The Sound, a local MMA gym.
