OLD CROW — An evacuation alert has been issued for three designated zones in Old Crow, Yukon, due to risk of flooding along the Porcupine River.
The alert was jointly issued by the Yukon government and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
The territory says in a news release that evacuations will begin if water rises quickly and crosses the Dump Road.
It says other areas may be impacted, but people in Zones 1, 2 and 3 should be ready to leave at a moment's notice.
The Porcupine River was upgraded to a flood watch at around 10:15 a.m., and the advisory says the water levels are rising driven by snowmelt.
It is advising people to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.
