Keep those wellies on, Squamish.

The Environment Canada rainfall warning continues Monday through tonight (Sept. 25) around Howe Sound. Rainfall between five to 65 mm is expected.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads," the alert reads.

The River Forecast Centre has also issued a high streamflow advisory for the Howe Sound region for the beginning of the week.

"Rivers are expected to rise rapidly in response to rainfall starting late Sunday into Monday, with peak flows occurring Monday through Wednesday, depending on rainfall timing and watershed size and response."

The alert reminds folks to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks and to avoid recreational activities such as fishing, swimming, boating or hiking near high streamflow rivers or streams.

The Weatherhood station on The Squamish Chief roof in downtown Squamish says it will reach 15 C Monday, dropping to 12 C overnight. Tuesday is expected to see a high of 13 C and an overnight low of 11 C. It will be about the same on Wednesday and Thursday.

Squamish meteorologist Jason Ross says a strong upper-level trough over the Eastern Pacific is sending a series of frontal systems into the south coast, bringing heavy rain at times and windy conditions through the midweek. The high pressure will rebuild over southern B.C. from the northeast Pacific towards next weekend, bringing drier conditions.

ICBC tips for driving in poor conditions

  • Posted speed limits are designed for ideal road conditions. Slow down when driving in rain.
  • Allow yourself at least twice the normal braking distance on wet or slippery roads.
  • Avoid driving through flooded or washed out roads.
  • Use extreme caution when approaching highway maintenance equipment including plows, salt and sand trucks. Never pass on the right.
  • Check tire pressure regularly. Pressure drops in colder conditions.
  • Keep the wiper fluid topped up for clearer visibility.
  • Keep your gas tank full to prevent gasoline from freezing in extreme temperatures.
  • Check roads and weather before your trip at toll-free 1-800-550-4997 or www.drivebc.ca
