CALGARY — Police have charged the owner of a dog that was left in a hot car and died on Canada Day. Officers say they received a call about a distressed dog inside the locked car with its windows rolled all the way up.

The "abnormally formed" tail led to Kookbie the dog having defecation problems, which a vet said created hygienic issues.

Pets are considered personal property, and the principles of property law generally apply to pet ownership.

A shipment of live eels was being transported from Toronto to Vancouver.
