Riders rumble into downtown

On Sunday (Sept. 20) don't be surprised to see hundreds of Harley Davidson motorcycles riding through downtown when Rumble to the Rock III rolls in conjunctions with a Squamish Classic Car Club annual Show and Shine display of hot rods, classic and muscle cars on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The motorcycles are expected to arrive at O'Siem Pavillion Park at noon where there will be a barbecue presented by the Parkside Restaurant, music, and the spectacle of hundreds of motorcycles and leather clad riders. The entire community is invited.

Squamish welcomes the Association of Railway Museums (ARM) annual conference to the community. ARM 2009 is the annual meeting for ARM and its 160 member museums from all over North America. This year, from Sept. 16 to 20, the West Coast Railway Heritage Park plays host to over 110 delegates who will stay at local Squamish hotels. Showcased throughout the five-day conference will be the best of what this region has to offer - a visit to the B.C. Museum of Mining at Britannia, some downtown shopping and local attractions, great meals and a wrap up banquet catered by local restaurants, a trip to Whistler and the new Peak to Peak gondola, and a Royal Hudson train trip to Vancouver. It will be a true Sea to Sky experience for the many who are coming to the region for the first time.

A two day celebration where Squamish Valley Artists open their studios to the public is this weekend, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 19 and 20) from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Venues include the Upstares Gallery at 37991A Cleveland Avenue, the Adventure Centre, the Squamish Arts council building and many more. Look for your ArtWalk Map and Guide in last week's newspaper flyer pack, at The Chief office on Second Ave., at the UpStares Gallery in downtown Squamish or at the Adventure Centre. Dianne Gaines of Vannoort Bulbs will be the featured speaker at the meeting of the Squamish Gardeners on Monday (Sept. 21) at 7 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library. Her talk will be Spring Bulbs and she will demonstrate layering of bulbs for the best effect. Non-members are welcome to attend for a fee of $5.

The TD bank in Squamish is joining the nationwide TD Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up by organizing a massive volunteer clean up of Brohm Lake on (Sunday) Sept. 20. Meet at the Brohm Lake parking lot at 10 a.m. All supplies will be handed out at the site. Prizes will also handed out for hardworking cleaners willing to get their hands dirty. Learn about the hidden world of mushrooms, on a guided walk with the Squamish Environmental Conservation Society, Sunday (Sept. 20) at 1 p.m. Walk leader Terry Taylor of the Vancouver Mycological Society will explain the ecology of fungi and their roles in the forest ecosystem. About two hours walking on flat, rooty trails. Meet at the Brackendale Elementary School parking lot shortly before the walk.

The Bereavement Support Group is a six-week facilitated service for those experiencing loss through death. The sessions will be held each Tuesday starting on Sept. 22 to Oct. 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sea to Sky Community Services at 38142 Second Avenue. The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the climber's parking lot at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 22) for a Mountain FM Tower and Octopus Gardens hike. Be prepared for hills and rough trails each week and the majority of the hikes are from three to five hours long. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

You are invited to join the Adult Evening Book Club at the Squamish Public Library on Thursday (Sept. 24) from 7 to 8 p.m. when the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak will be discussed.

Interested in singing in a great community choir? There is still time to join the Sea to Sky Singers as they prepare for their Christmas concert. The Seniors Health and Wellness Fair will be held in the Squamish Seniors Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Volunteers are needed to help the Fair run smoothly and if you can offer a couple of hours on that day, please call Karen at 604-815-6855.

The Royal Canadian Legion Diamond Head Branch #277 will have a regular dart night each Tuesday at 7 p.m. and each Wednesday is bridge night. The Tantalus Walking Club members are asked to meet at Canadian Tire on Thursday (Sept. 24) at 10 a.m. for a walk on the Mamquam Trail to the Golf course. The one-hour walks are usually followed by refreshments at a local coffee shop. For those who wish a slightly greater challenge, additional walks also take place on Tuesdays. Friday (Sept. 25) is the cut-off date for those seniors wishing to take the bus trip to the River Rock Casino. It is sponsored by Squamish Branch No. 70 Senior Citizens Association of B.C. and you are asked to phone Elaine at 604-898-5463.

The Rotary 200 Club winners in the monthly draw held on Sept. 3 were: Ivor Hurst and Jim Mulholland ($100), George Rawsthorn ($120), Ann Peters ($130) and Alex Marshall ($150).

A new community a cappella youth choir for girls ages 13 to 18 years is holding auditions on Sunday (Sept. 20) from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building located in O'Siem Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue. The next Creative Connections for seniors meeting will be held in the new Squamish Seniors Centre on Thursday (Sept. 24) at 1:30 p.m. The meeting is open to any seniors who wish to attend.

On Friday (Sept. 25) a Loonie pro-d day skate will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre arena from 12:05 to 1:45 p.m.

The Shifters, a Squamish 1950s rock 'n roll band, will be performing on the rooftop at Gelato Carina at noon-hour on Sunday (Sept. 20) featuring music of Elvis, the Beatles, Rolling Stones etc. Other entertainment is also lined up until 4 p.m.
