Veterans honoured next week

Each year the Royal Canadian Legion Diamond Head Branch #277 organizes the annual Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 11.

This coming Wednesday the auditorium at Brennan Park Recreation Centre is expected to be filled to capacity as the community gathers to remember those who gave their lives to protect our freedom and to also remember those young men and women who are serving in Afghanistan today.

Leading the parade into the auditorium will be the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe and Drum Band, members of the Royal Canadian Legion, members of the RCMP, Fire Fighters, Ambulance personnel, Royal Canadian Air Cadets and members of the Scout and Guide Movement. The Sgt. at Arms for the parade is Ryan Pedersen.

Taking part in the service will be Rev. Wendy Eyre-Gray, members of the Ministerial Association and Dale Harry from the Squamish Nation, and the address will be given by Mayor Greg Gardner. The Sea to Sky Singers and the Squamish Youth Choir will also participate. Following the service, the annual Wreath Laying Service will be held at the Cenotaph on Cleveland Avenue.

On Sunday (Nov. 8) members of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold their annual church parade into St. John's Anglican Church at 10 a.m. Rev. Wendy Eyre-Gray is the Legion Padre and she and the congregation will welcome all Legion members.

A Remembrance Day Celebration at Totem Hall on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. is open to all residents. Everyone is invited to take drums, flags and wreaths to honour past and present war veterans. The day includes a traditional Pow-Wow celebration and the MC will be Swanamia of the Wai wa Kum Reserve.

The next "Sheppie" walk will be on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. in the parking lot opposite the Adventure Centre on Logger's Lane. The group welcomes all purebred German and Belgian Shepherds and Malinois and their owners. Please bring a leash and poop bags. For further information call 604-815-8020.

The Squamish Environmental Conservation Society will hold its monthly bird count on Sunday (Nov. 8) and members are asked to meet at the Howe Sound Inn at 8 a.m. The birders will be looking for wintering over ducks in the estuary and local rivers. The Over the Hill Hikers are going to Stanley Park on Tuesday (Nov. 10) and members are asked to meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. for carpooling. Call Heather at 604-892-9003 if you wish more information.

This weekend (Nov. 6, 7 and 8) a Ladies Curling Bonspiel is taking place at the Curling Club. Stop by and see some great curling as there are seven out of town teams competing with our local curlers.

The Friends of the Library invite you to the Squamish Public Library during the book sale tomorrow (Nov. 7) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday (Nov. 8) from 10 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the sale will go towards enhancing the library.

Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is presenting the Spirit of Squamish celebrating Canada Music Week with a concert featuring young local musicians and Canadian compositions. HSPPAA also welcomes children's performer Norm Foote and his daughter Maria as special guest performers. All proceeds from this concert will support the AME (Access Musical Education) Fund, which provides bursaries for local students. Admission is by donation and the concert will be held in St. John's Anglican Church on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m.

You are invited to the Squamish Public Library on Thursday (Nov. 12) at 7 p.m. to meet and hear Natasha Rosewood, author of the book, Aaagh! I Think I'm Psychic (And You Can Be Too). Natasha will also be talking about her latest book, Aaagh! I Thought You Were Dead!

Squamish Branch No. 70 Senior Citizens Association of British Columbia is sponsoring a bus trip to the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The cut off date is Friday, Nov. 20 and if interested please call Elaine at 604-898-5463. If there is enough interest, a day trip to the Burnaby Heritage Park on Dec. 2 to see the decorated village is planned.

The Squamish Historical Society will hold its membership meeting at the West coast Railway Heritage Park on Thursday (Nov. 12) at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will by Tamsyn Morote (Relay for Life) and now Recreational Programmer for the Olympics at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Tamsyn is hoping to partner with the Historical Society to display photos, maps etc. for the Olympic celebration to be held in Squamish in Feb. The meeting is open to everyone.

Thanks to the great members who worked so hard, Weight Watchers is back after being closed for three months. Join the group each Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Mountain Retreat Hotel.

This is a month filled with Christmas Bazaars and mark your calendars for Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital at Trinity Hall, Squamish United Church from 9:30 to 12 noon, Nov. 21 at St. John's Anglican Church and Nov. 28 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

The Polar Express, a magical journey to the North Pole will once again be taking children of all ages on a truly unique adventure. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5 and 6, leaving the West Coast Railway Heritage Park at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. This year, both regular and first class fares are being offered in four coaches. Regular fare starts at $9 for children, two to 12 years of age and $22 for adults. Children under two are free in all classes. First class fare is $32 and includes a photograph and a souvenir mug. Any seniors who are interested in painting Christmas decorations are invited to a meeting in the Art Room at the Squamish Seniors' Centre on Monday (Nov. 9) at 10 a.m. Now is a good time to register for art programs coming in December including Christmas card making, candle making, printmaking and tempera paint making workshops.
