Squamish hosts homeless doc screening to break down barriers

"Us and Them" to be shown on Nov. 6

A documentary that took a decade to make is about to be screened in Squamish.

Filmmaker Krista Loughton spent 10 years creating Us and Them, in which she meets and befriends four homeless people in Victoria, B.C. In Loughton's first feature-length film, she brings a humanizing lens to homelessness.

In Squamish, the film's screening hopes to have local impact. After the feature-length documentary is shown, Squamish Helping Hands and the Squamish Community Foundation will host a conversation about the role of a community and creating a sense of belonging will help inform community programming at Under One Roof. The facility is currently under construction in Squamish, but will have supportive housing, food programs and facilities as well as other on-site support services.

"People require a social support network, opportunities to learn skills, and discover purpose, to live in a community where they find understanding and belonging," a press release states. "Under One Roof will be that place – operating under the housing first model – providing folks with a home, supports for treatment, counselling and other services without requirements based on their sobriety."

The screening and conversation will be held at the Squamish Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 6.

Everyone is welcome.
