ABOUT TOWN: Hansel and Gretel back at the Eagle Eye this weekend

Over 50 students at Valleycliffe Elementary School have been busy in rehearsals this week for their presentation of the popular and much-loved musical Hansel and Gretel.

Over 50 students at Valleycliffe Elementary School have been busy in rehearsals this week for their presentation of the popular and much-loved musical Hansel and Gretel. This production is part of the Missoula Children's Theatre unique international touring project. Performances are planned at the Eagle Eye Theatre Friday (Oct. 22) and Saturday (Oct. 23) at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and are available at Mostly Books, IGA and at the school.



The West Coast Railway Heritage Park is gearing up for Halloween and the Hobgoblin Express is ready to roll each night from Tuesday (Oct. 26) to Saturday Oct. 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The price is $4 per person. The last train leaves at 8 p.m. but plan on arriving early to check out all the ghoulish exhibits in the park. Over 200 carved pumpkins will be on display courtesy of students at Don Ross Secondary School.



A Night of Music is planned at Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue Saturday evening (Oct. 23) at 7 p.m. Featured soloists include Jennifer Galloway, Carol Grolman, Carolyn Grass and the church choir. It will also be a time to celebrate the gift of a new keyboard and Chuck Cave and David Kozuki from Tom Lee Music will give an organ demonstration during the second half of the program. Tickets available at the door are $10 each and include refreshments.



There is a book sale at the Squamish Public Library Saturday (Oct. 23) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday (Oct. 24) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.



The Squamish Estuary Conservation Society's annual general meeting will be held in the Brackendale Art Gallery on Thursday (Oct. 28) at 7 p.m. The guest speaker Michael Allen is a bear researcher, bear tour guide and teacher and his topic will be of interest to many, Backyard Bears! It is suggested that memberships be renewed at this meeting at $20 for individuals and $25 per family.



A support group for women dealing with difficult relationships and/or family conflict (abuse, difficulties connecting with children, stress) has been formed. If you wish more information on the Mothers Support Group, please contact the Howe Sound Women's Centre at 604-892-5748.



Long time Squamish resident Shirley Tomen will be featured on Community 10's program Not Just For Seniors and Shirley's sharing will be aired on Tuesday (Oct. 26) at 7 and 10 p.m. and on Wednesday (Oct. 27) at 10 a.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.



The next Teen Book Club meeting at the Squamish Public Library will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. copies of the book Saffy's Angel by Hillary McKay are ready to be signed out at the library now. Pizza and pop will be provided at the meeting. Any teens ages 13 years and up are welcome to join the discussion group. Community flu clinics are scheduled at the Squamish Health Unit at 1140 Hunter Place (behind IGA) on Wednesday (Oct. 27) from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday Nov. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday Nov. 5 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. More clinics are also planned in November. Please check the advertisement in The Chief to see if you are eligible for a free flu vaccine, otherwise the cost is $15 to all others.



The big Halloween Spook Space Odyssey is planned at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this is Brennan Parks Family Halloween party and a fun time is in store for all participants. Entry is free and there is a $2 game card that allows kids to win prizes galore! Please note, this event is Saturday and not Sunday, Oct. 31.



The Screening Mammography Mobile Clinic is in our community at the Squamish General Hospital from Nov. 17 to Dec. 2. Those eligible include B.C. residents ages 40 to 79 (outside of this age group women are accepted with a doctor's referral), have no breast changes (new lumps, thickening or discharge), can provide the name of a doctor to receive the results, have not had a mammogram within 12 months, have not had breast cancer, do not have breast implants and are not pregnant or breastfeeding. To arrange an appointment, please call Monday to Friday toll free to 1-800-663-9203. When phoning, please have either your Care Card number or SMP ID number from a previous mammogram at hand.



On Monday (Oct. 25) the topic of the Waldorf Education Parenting Series will be Our 12 Senses. The meeting is held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Coast Garibaldi Health Unit (behind IGA) and the entrance and parking are at the rear of the building.
