Local authorities this week issued a public advisory about dangerous wildlife activity after a pet dog was injured by a bear while walking on the Garibaldi Springs Golf Course trail network.
The District of Squamish, in partnership with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, said in a statement that the incident occurred on Wednesday (March 27) evening. The dog was being talked off-leash when the incident occurred, authorities said.
Late Thursday (March 28), authorities issued the following update: "It has been confirmed that the incident that left a dog injured on the evening of March 27 involved a black bear. This is considered a defensive attack by the bear in response to an unleashed dog encounter. The property owner will be posting signs in the area."
Added the notice, "In an effort to mitigate the potential for wildlife conflicts, we would like to remind owners to keep dogs on leash. We can expect to encounter dangerous wildlife within all areas of Squamish, so please be alert and aware at all times.
Citizens were urged to report wildlife sightings and encounters to the Conservation Officer Service's 24-hour hotline at 1-877-952-7277 or #7277 on your cell phone.
