Briefs from the RCMP and Fire Rescue

At 9 p.m. on Friday (July 7), RCMP responded to a call of a non-responsive male at the Tantalus Manor on Wilson Crescent in Dentville. The man was located outside the building suffering from head trauma to the head.

52-year old Robert William Sherlock, who had lived at the Cleveland Ave. building nicknamed the Purple Palace before a mass eviction in May, was transported to Squamish General hospital by ambulance and transferred to Lions Gate Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

RCMP could not reveal the nature of the injuries while the investigation continues. RCMP are asking for public assistance in locating Sherlock's family members.

Anyone with information on the incident leading to Sherlock's injuries are asked to call the Squamish detachment at 604 892-6100.

Knife wielder back on the streets

A man arrested for pulling a knife on employees at Kellysports Consignment on June 12, and, while awaiting his hearing, arrested again for chasing a man with another weapon has been released.At 10:25 p.m. Saturday (July 8), RCMP responded to a call of a man being chased by another man brandishing a weapon in the 38000 block of Juniper Crescent in Valleycliffe. Members attended and arrested Allan Douglas James, 48, who was on the street despite a June 12 arrest involving a weapon. There were no injuries in either incident.

A hearing scheduled for Monday (July 10) involved both charges. Following a Crown medical examiner's assertion that James does not have mental or emotional problems, he was released on condition that he not approach the Chieftain Mall and have no contact with various individuals.

Truckload of garbage dumped in Squamish River

On Wednesday, July 5, RCMP responded to a call of illegal dumping in the Squamish River.

A witness reported seeing a blue, older model pick up back up into the Squamish River and dump a full bed load of garbage. And individual is suspected, according to Cpl. Dave Ritchie, but without more evidence, cannot be arrested. The matter was referred to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Ritchie reminds witnesses that a license plate number may be crucial in an investigation.

Firefighters attend back-to-back kitchen fires

On Saturday (July 8) at 5:25 p.m. Fire Rescue responded to a call of smoke in a Spruce Dr. apartment. Less than half an hour later, Fire Rescue attended another call of smoke in a residence at the Diamondhead Apts. Both calls were the result of residents leaving unattended pots cooking on a stove top.

Firefighter Bob Fulton reminds residents that kitchen fires are the number one cause of structural fires in Canada."When you're cooking, don't get distracted," he said.

Vehicle fire destroys man's home

On Friday (July 7) at 9:27 p.m., Fire Rescue responded to a vehicle fire at the Murrin Park parking lot.A man living in a camperized van parked and went for swim. When he returned, his home was fully engulfed."It was pretty well destroyed so the cause is undetermined," said Fulton.
