If you’ve been around Howe Sound Secondary School lately, you would’ve probably noticed that the area is under construction.
Well, that’s because the crews are busy working on a building a bus pullout, a walking path and a sanitary lift station.
The District of Squamish approached the school board in May, asking for its blessing to go ahead with the work. The board agreed.
The pullout is expected to be placed on the corner of the school right by the intersection of Buckley and Carson. It would be for the existing bus stop that’s already in place in that area.
Authorities hope that it will reduce traffic, as the pullout will allow buses to stop without blocking cars behind it.
Work on a trail has also begun. Once finished, it will be on Howe Sound Secondary’s side of Buckley Avenue parallel to the road.
This path would stretch from Howe Sound to Squamish Elementary.
The goal is to eliminate the tendency for students to walk on the road. Currently, there isn’t a sidewalk on that side of the street.
Both the bus pullout and the trail are expected to be complete before school starts in September.
Finally, crews are also working on replacing the sewage lift station next to the southernmost entrance to Howe Sound on Buckley.
The current sewage lift is past its service life, and construction on the replacement expected to be done by early next year.
