The public will have two chances to grill municipal candidates before the June 24 byelection.

In keeping with tradition, the Chamber of Commerce hosts an all candidates meeting at the Sea to Sky Hotel June 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. with moderator Tim Shoults facilitating questions from the audience.

And for the first time this year, municipal campaigning in the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada will include voices from outdoor recreation community leaders during a forum organized by the Squamish Off Road Cycling Association (SORCA).

On June 19, the seven candidates vying for the council seat now open due to the death of Coun. Ray Peters will be at the Adventure Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. to field questions from a panel of five outdoor user groups with interests in mountain biking, windsurfing/kiteboarding, climbing, kayaking and trails.

"We see this as an opportunity to provide a venue to inform the public about a variety of issues that are important to our community with regard to recreation, trails, land use and healthy lifestyle choices," said SORCA president Cliff Miller.

Each candidate will be given two minutes to introduce themselves to the audience and communicate their election platform prior to the panel question period. The audience will also be given the opportunity to put questions forward to the candidates through Miller as moderator.

The Chamber of Commerce partnered with SORCA to turn the event into a charity BBQ. Residents can enjoy food and beverages by donation at the Adventure Centre grounds where shelter will be provided in case of rain.
