Squamish's Community Policing Station on Cleveland Avenue is closing for an indefinite period for repairs mandated by the RCMP, police and District of Squamish officials announced this week.

In a statement issued on Monday (Nov. 22), officials stated, "A recent building review by RCMP Departmental Security concluded the need for a short-term closure and outlined repairs and upgrades necessary to reopen the building."

Linda Glenday, district general manager of protective and support services, on Wednesday (Nov. 24) said she couldn't estimate when the downtown facility might reopen.

"The upgrades range from very small to quite extensive. It's quite a scope of work," she said. "It's primarily structural work to the office and technical upgrades. Because it [the work] is of a policing nature, I can't reveal the details."

No programs or services offered at the Community Policing Station, which opened in 2005, will be affected by the closure, officials said. All such programs -including Block Watch, Victim Services, Citizens on Patrol and RCMP Bike Patrols -will continue to be offered out of the Squamish RCMP detachment at Finch Drive and Highway 99, the statement said.

The Community Policing Station is a leased facility, Glenday said. The District of Squamish is covering the cost of the repairs, she said, adding that she couldn't yet provide an estimate of the cost to taxpayers.
