COVID-19: Squamish, do not seek testing if not sick: VCH

Health authority acknowledges cases in 'coastal communities'

Though not providing hard numbers, Vancouver Coastal Health is confirming there are COVID-19 cases in Squamish and other coastal communities.

The health authority is also asking that people without symptoms of the virus — fever, cough, fatigue — not seek testing.

"There are people in coastal rural communities who have tested positive for COVID-19. They, along with their household members, are self-isolating at home and are recovering," said Catherine Loiacono, of Vancouver Coastal Health, in an email to The Chief on Sunday night.

"To protect patient confidentiality and because the situation is changing on a daily basis, we will not be sharing the number of people in the community who received a positive test result," Loiacono said.

A local has self-identified as having tested positive for the virus, and the District of Squamish sent out a release on Sunday acknowledging there are self-identified "cases" in town.

VCH Public Health is investigating the sources of transmission and is following up with anyone who may have had close contact with these people.

"Please be assured that VCH staff and physicians, along with your local health care providers, are well-prepared for what may come. VCH is working closely with local providers to ensure that we are equipped to provide care to people who need it."

People who do not have symptoms will not be tested for COVID-19.

Vancouver Coastal Health asks residents not seek out testing if you have no symptoms, mild symptoms, or are a returning traveller and isolating at home. If you have questions or concerns, call your doctor or 811.

What you can do now

The health authority offers the following oft-repeated advice:

·Staying home when you are sick.

·Engage in social distancing — stay one metre apart — when out in public.

·Wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

·Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Coughing into your elbow or a tissue and then washing or cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer immediately.
