Crumpit Woods project kicks off

Mountain bikers can expect temporary trail closures

This week, bulldozers will move into Crumpit Woods.

Diamond Head Land Co. announced that it's kicking off site preparations on the property northwest of the intersection of Westway Avenue and Plateau Drive in Valleycliffe for development.

"Tree clearing work will begin immediately to start the first phase of the subdivision, which comprises [of] 44 single-family building lots," company officials said in a statement issued on Tuesday (April 10).

In 2009, the District of Squamish gave the OK to the project, which includes 109 building lots overall, with a series of amendments to its variance permit. But when the housing market tanked, the project was put on the back burner, David Rittberg, a land developer with the Cardinal Group, told The Chief last month.

The project borders some of Squamish's popular mountain biking trails. Two trails - Seven Stitches and Summer's Eve - may be affected by the project during construction phases, said Mike Nelson, the government liaison for the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) and an environmental consultant on the Crumpit Woods project.

"We are talking to the land owners and looking at ways to continue trail access," he said.

The trails are to be included as part of the completed project. However, during site clearing, riders may see some temporary closures, Nelson said.

Diamond Head Land Co. is part of the Cardinal Concrete Group of Companies based in Squamish. In 2006, Cardinal Group developed the Edgewater Townhouse complex.
