Derelict 30ft-vessel possibly adrift in Howe Sound

Navigational Warning has been issued for cabin cruiser last seen at Britannia Beach

A derelict vessel that could be a hazard to other boaters is adrift in Howe Sound.

Late in the afternoon on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Coast Guard received a report of the vessel aground at Britannia Beach. On Jan. 29, Coast Guard crews went to the area to assess the vessel, however, it could not be located. There was no evidence of pollution, the spokesperson said.

Squamish's John Buchanan says he reported the vessel when he saw it aground, with a hole in its hull. He smelled gas at the time, he said.

A National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) flight has been scheduled to assist with locating the vessel, the spokesperson with the Coast Guard said.

This is the second time this week there have been issues with damaged vessels in local waters.

On Monday, Jan. 27, the Coast Guard was notified that a sailboat had sunk in the Mamquam Blind Channel.

That vessel is being salvaged by its owner, the Coast Guard told The Chief.
