It’s anchors aweigh for folks living aboard boats in Deep Cove.
District of North Vancouver council has adopted an agreement with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority that gives the municipality jurisdiction over the cove.
New rules include mandatory preregistration to moor a boat at one of four government-owned floats, and a maximum stay of 72 hours.
Anyone caught violating the new rules will be subject to a $300 fine.
As of Thursday, there were four boats moored in Deep Cove, according to the district. District staff do not have a date set for when enforcement will begin.
When council debated the live-aboard ban last month, some members of council raised concern the cost of the agreement with the port authority would not result in much benefit to the district. Other council members worried that banning live-aboards would have the same effect as evicting people with no other place to go.
But when the ban faced its final vote on June 14, it passed without debate in a matter of minutes. Only Coun. Jim Hanson voted against the accompanying bylaw changes.
