Enforcement efforts stepped up for long weekend

Officials aim to ensure enjoyment of B.C. Parks

Provincial compliance and enforcement teams plan to be out in force this Victoria Day long weekend (May 21 to 23), which is traditionally the kickoff to camping season in the province, B.C. Parks officials said this week.

In a statement issued on Wednesday (May 18), officials in charge of provincial parks on the North Shore and in the Sea to Sky Corridor reminded those planning to visit B.C. Parks campgrounds and facilities "to act appropriately in order to ensure that the parks remain a memorable destination for all to enjoy."

Activities that may cause damage to parks facilities or disturb others, including the consumption of alcohol in public places, noise causing a disturbance or the damage, possession or removal of any natural resource, will result in enforcement action that may include fines and/or criminal charges, officials said.

Park rangers, RCMP, conservation officers and park facility operators plan to be out to enforce regulations and ensure compliance with those regulations.

The new camping season brings the introduction of new facilities at a number of the area's provincial parks, including a new playground and bike trail geared toward young children at Alice Lake, new Olympic Legacy cabins at Porteau Cove and upgrades to day-use parking at Nairn Falls Provincial Park. Canoe rentals are now also available at Birkenhead Lake, officials said.
