Fire strikes Howe Sound brewery

People evacuated from building

A small electrical fire at Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company hasn't stopped the beer from flowing.

Monday (July 15) morning at 6 a.m., Squamish Fire Rescue received a call about a fire at the popular pub on Cleveland Avenue in downtown Squamish. Arianna Dressler, who lives in a neighbouring apartment at Studio SQ, watched as two fire trucks pulled up at the front and back of the building.

I noticed all these people coming out, she said.

Although there was a lot of smoke, no fire was located, District of Squamish spokesperson Christina Moore said after speaking to fire chief Russ Inouye. Firefighters confirmed the smoke was from an electrical fire in the women's change room. The facility's staff is on a 24-hour fire watch and an electrician was called in.

There was minimal damage and no injures, he wrote in an email, adding there was also nothing suspicious about the incident, Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said.

It's business as usual, brewery owner Leslie Fenn wrote The Chief in an email. The smoke was coming from a small breaker and the building was evacuated as a precaution.
