First Nations police unit welcomes new member

Cst. Zonderland steps into new shoes

Squamish's Integrated First Nations Unit (IFNU) has a new member in uniform.

After working as a youth liaison officer with the Squamish detachment, Cst. Melanie Zonderland is the most recent recruit to serve the Squamish and Tsleil Waututh First Nations.

Cst. Zonderland is no stranger to the IFNU. Over the years she's supported a number of IFNU activities and initiatives in the community, a IFNU press release stated.

The IFNU was established between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the West Vancouver Police Department to provide enhanced policing services that are culturally sensitive and responsive to local nations.

Zonderland will be filling big shoes. Cst. David Hamlin, one of the original members of the IFNU, is transferring to general duties at the Squamish detachment. Hamlin was posted the IFNU since 2008. His position will allow Hamlin to share his First Nations policing expertise with his new colleagues.
