GamesTown title to boost income

Towns across B.C. are invited to compete for the title of GamesTown 2010, and a win could mean substantial money towards local sports facilities.

"Tell us and the world how individuals and organizations in your community are making a difference in supporting sport, healthy living, sustainable development and of course, the Olympic Games spirit," states the event website.

The gold, silver and bronze medal winners will receive cash awards of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 to put towards upgrading a local sports, fitness or healthy living facility. Grand prize winners will also receive tickets to the 2010 Winter Games.

Draws will be held in March, April and May when 16 communities each month will win prizes to use as incentives and awards to encourage their residents to participate. In total, 15 pairs of tickets to the 2010 Winter Games are available to be won as part of the monthly prizes.

Gambling pays off

Sea to Sky Community Services Society received $55,950 in provincial gaming grants to support their childcare services this week, the province announced this week. Sea to Sky Community Services provides the Sea to Sky Corridor with infant, after-school and child care spaces, as well as information and resources for residents.

Altogether, three community groups in the provincial riding will benefit from provincial government gaming grants, with a total of $89,450 in the human and social services category, stated a news release.

The Bowen Island Preschool and Community Daycare Society was awarded $11,250 for their out of school care, $8,750 for their daycare program and $7,000 for the preschool program. The Bowen Youth Centre received $6,500 in funding for youth centre activities.
