IIO investigators deployed to Squamish

Authorities probe circumstances surrounding injuries to man who was in Squamish RCMP custody

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has sent investigators to Squamish to look into a matter involving a prisoner who may have been injured while in the custody of Squamish RCMP.

In a statement issued on Friday (July 5), on Tuesday (July 2), an officer who was responding to a complaint arrested a man and placed him in cells at the Squamish detachment. After several hours, the man complained of pain. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with an arm injury.

According to the office, the IIO's mandate is to conduct investigations into police-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence.

The IIO was notified of the matter on Tuesday at 9:50 a.m., authorities said.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO's goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting, the statement said.
