Kermodes win home openers

Men's and women's teams defeat Bearcats on home floor

The Quest Kermodes men's basketball team put together the greatest offensive display in the history of the program, blasting the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats 103-74 on Friday (Nov. 12).

The impressive offensive flurry was sparked by a second quarter, which saw Quest score 41 points and pull away for the victory.

Head coach Sean Shook was pleased with his team's performance and said that he hopes the high scoring continues.

"I don't think we've ever scored that much in a league game," he said. "It's always been a struggle for us as a team to put points on the board but that wasn't the case at all tonight."

Kermodes guard Jose Colorado was on fire all night long and was unconscious from his "office" at the right corner. Colorado scored 32 points and was lights out from beyond the arc, hitting six of 11 three pointers.

"Jose is a pretty crafty player," Shook said. "He does things you can't teach out there. Him and John (Pankratz) had some great chemistry out there tonight."

Pankratz had a strong game himself as the Langley native was a beast on both ends, scoring 27 points and dishing out six assists but also collecting eight steals.

It was rebounding by committee as three different Kermodes picked up five boards each, with three others grabbing four.

"We don't only want to rely on our bigs to rebound," Shook said. "We had a lot of our guards picking up rebounds today because our big guys boxed out the other team well."

Point guard Bryce Froberg was all over the floor for the Kermodes and had a terrific all around game, with 11 points, seven steals, seven assists and five rebounds.

Quest's bench was also effective, outscoring the CBC bench 17-2.

Nico Umaget was a key contributor off the bench, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds in limited playing time.

For the women, it was smooth sailing all night long as they lead the game from start to finish and dominated CBC, winning 73-41.

Despite the emphatic victory, head coach Mike Woollard stressed that the team shouldn't rest on its laurels.

"We still have a lot to work on," he said shortly after picking up his first win in the British Columbia College's Athletic Association (BCCAA). "We didn't come out with the energy required early on but we did pick up our play in the second half."

It was an excellent team effort for the women as they had five players that scored in double figures on the night. Guard Cassidy Osterling led the way with 13 points on six of 12 shooting.

Forward Ruth Thanert was one rebound away from a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine boards.

Woollard said he liked the way the team distributed the ball.

"We don't really have any set plays for any one player," he said. "We used a lot of motion today and worked the ball inside and out well. I really liked the way we shared the ball and it showed on the score sheet."

The team did suffer a scare in the fourth quarter when starting point guard Delainee Behrns went down with an injury. According to Woollard, Behrns hyper extended her right knee and her status is unknown for next game.

He added that Behrns is a major part of the team and it would be a huge blow to lose her. However, the team can take solace in the fact that rookie point guard Maja Smiljic played well in relief, picking up seven assists, five rebounds and four points.

Up next for the Kermodes will be back-to-back encounters with Langara College on Friday (Nov. 19) and Saturday (Nov. 20).

The women will start both games at 6 p.m. while the men tip-off at 8 p.m. All games will take place at the Quest University Gym.
